Bad Art Friend: The Theft, Remix, and Reclamation of Crush

A Reading by Jen Logan Meyer and Heather Bennett Thursday, December 4, 6pm, 2025, Bruno David Gallery

The image, Crush, and I mean the 43 x 65 in. framed first edition number which had disappeared from a Lower East Side gallery a few years before, showed up one snowy day at a bus station in Lower Manhattan. For Heather Bennett, the artist of the work, and her friend and confidant, writer Jen Logan Meyer, this ordeal became a vivid, yet piteous legend. Galvanized by the New York Times viral article, “Who is the Bad Art Friend?”, a tale about a clash between two writers over ownership of a story, Bennett and Meyer decided to work on telling the story of the theft of Crush, together. In this collaboration, they each independently delve into the image, its impetus, its import, and its plundered history, causing meaning to ricochet and expand. Crush is reclaimed through their deferent yet divergent voices telling the story of its loss in their own way.

Jen Logan Meyer will read from her text, Nine, 2025 and Heather Bennett will read from her text, Crush Remix, 2025 on Thursday, December 4, at 6pm at Bruno David Gallery where a second edition of the image Crush currently hangs in the exhibition REMIX. Poet and culture critic, Eileen G’Sell will engage in a discussion with the artists and audience immediately following the reading. Freixenet cava, pictured in the lower left of Crush, will be flowing at the event. Please join us.
